What’s the biggest difference for you between this year and last year?

This question is solid because it implies that you understand how weird and tumultuous the teenage years can be. You’re not telling your kid to be different in any way. You’re just asking how the landscape is different (and how she’s different).

  1. This is a GREAT way to let someone talk about the most important things in their life. It can be really hard to know what’s going on and significant with someone, but this gives huge insight into what looms large for them.

It’s also non-judgmental, as there’s no right or wrong answer, no value put on whether this year is better or worse, just asks them to call out the difference. This question would be great for anyone, especially someone you want to be closer too, but might have relational scars/barriers with.
