This is a perfect way to start a team meeting or weekly check in. You learn about the music your colleagues first liked. You get people talking. And if there’s a wide age range in the room, you get the added chuckle of LP vs. 8-track vs. CD.

I used this question to kick off an advisory board meeting I was running via conference call. We have a good number of different ages represented among the members of the board so everyone got a good chuckle out of how the “type of media” definitely dates how old you are (from LP records to CDs). I think everyone has fond memories of the first piece of music they bought so it’s a good way to start out a meeting with everyone feeling good and learning a little more about each other. This worked great on a conference call. The question doesn’t prompt long answers which is good if you are looking for a short but meaningful way to start a meeting.
As a professional musician, I’m not sure I’m your target audience. The first piece of music that I really connected with was found in an alley behind my father’s office. Somehow, in the deep Appalachian mountains, a page of a Prelude by JS Bach appeared. I, to this day, have no idea how that happened. I took it home and played it and was hooked on JSBach for life. So, maybe a better question might be “What is the first piece of music you really connected with?”
